How To Prevent Neck Pain When Using Devices

Posted on

When you spend time looking down at your computer, tablet, or phone, you may notice you have constant neck pain. As you sit with your head tilted down looking at a screen, it can cause you to get muscle strain in your neck. The following are some things you can do to help alleviate neck pain caused by looking at your devices:

Elevate Your Screen

When you are looking at your device or computer, consider lifting the screen up to where you are looking at it parallel rather than looking down. If you are using a phone or tablet, hold the device up in front of your face. If your arms become fatigued, consider getting a holder that can keep the device up higher. You can also prop the device on a table or other high surface to help relieve the stress on your neck.

If your computer is causing your neck pain, find a way to raise the screen to a higher level. You can purchase a lift to sit the monitor on to help prevent you from looking downward. You can also get a different desk or surface for your computer that elevates the monitor, or even a stand-up desk would help.

Change Your Office Chair

If you sit at a desk, your chair may be contributing to your neck pain. Chair ergonomics are important when it comes to preventing neck pain. If your current office chair has a back that does not support your neck or does not reach high enough to support your neck while you work, you can suffer from a neck sprain. Instead, get an office chair that has a headrest. A headrest on your chair can support the back of your head. You can rest your head on the headrest to give your neck a break while you work.

Take Frequent Breaks

If you have to use your computer or device for a long period of time, make sure you are taking breaks every so often. Try to take a break every hour or so from your screen and stretch your neck. When you work on your device for hours at a time with no break, you can endure strained muscles. Taking a break gives you a moment to loosen your neck muscles and prevent them from aching.

Make sure you are doing all you can to avoid pain when you are using your device. If you are suffering from neck pain due to device use, be sure to visit a doctor or chiropractor to learn more about ways to alleviate the pain.
