Going In For Surgery? 3 Pre-Surgical Tips

Posted on

If you're going to be going in for surgery, you're probably already feeling stressed out. After your surgery though, you aren't going to be feeling up to doing much, so it's important to get things in order before you actually go in for your surgical procedure. Read on for three things to get done before you go in for your surgery.

Work On Your Health

Any type of surgery can take a toll on your body. If you aren't healthy or in shape to begin with, it can be even harder for you to recover. If you were thinking of a good time to start getting healthier, now is that time. If you're a smoker, stop smoking now. You can try it cold turkey, use nicotine patches, gum, or even get a prescription from your physician to help you stop smoking.

Start making healthier choices when it comes to food as well. Cook more at home using fresh and cleaner foods, rather than eating out or eating processed meals. Incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet and make your meals more colorful.

Exercise can go a long way in anyone, and it can also be beneficial in your recovery time from your surgery. Start taking walks or begin a workout routine if possible with permission from your physician.

Find A Caregiver

After surgery, you may need some help getting up and about. Have a caregiver in place to help you. A family member, close friend, or even a hired nurse can be used as a caregiver after your surgery. You may need help doing simple tasks such as getting out of bed, going to the bathroom, changing bandages, or getting to and from doctor visits. Have this caregiver in place long before your surgery so you aren't struggling to find someone later. Also, don't try to go without a caregiver. You could end up injuring yourself after your surgery if you try to do everything yourself.

Take Care Of Finances

Take care of your bills and other finances before you go in for your surgery. This way, you don't have to worry about having someone else pay your bills for you. Having your finances in order before you go in for surgery can also take some stress off of you after your surgery.

If you have a surgical procedure coming up, use the pre-surgery tips above to help make things easier for you post-surgery. Talk to your surgeon about other helpful tips.
